An innovative geodata exchange platform

Result of the project Digital Twin Munich as part of the funding guideline "Digitalization of Municipal Transport Systems" by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

On display is a holistic 3D data integration for optimizing urban planning processes for transport infrastructure in Plexmap.

The geodata exchange platform is the agile sub-project platform of the Digital Twin Munich and uses Plexmap for holistic 2D and 3D data integration to optimize urban planning processes.

The City of Munich has developed a geodata exchange platform as part of the Digital Twin Munich which operates on the Plexmap software from Geoplex. This platform is a SaaS solution outside the networks of the City of Munich administration in order to make geo-related data easily accessible for sub-projects (e.g., air pollution modeling, lane-model or extensive  projects (e.g. Tempus) and to provide it within closed project spaces. Secured through role and user management, components for data storage, data processing (ETL), standard interfaces and presentation separate areas are available. Separate areas enables effective collaboration in organizational and data-related aspects within (sub)projects. Both individuals and systems can access areas and interfaces as users.

This platform provides an innovative solution for managing, transforming, and visualizing of extensive static, dynamic and historical 2D and 3D data. This allows urban planners to identify synergies and make informed decisions to optimize new mobility concepts and their impact on traffic flow and emissions reduction.

Contribution to the digitalization of municipal transport systems

A variety of typical geodata, especially the lane model, the air pollution monitoring stations and screening sections are provided via interfaces and viewers to project members.  Furthermore, extracted data is also provided to other related projects. In addition to the current status and the possibility of providing different planning versions of traffic routes simultaneously in the form of “moments”, it is also possible to calculate and compare before and after scenarios.

 Urban planners can better analyze traffic flows and identify optimization potential. This results in more efficient transportation systems and improved mobility for the citizens of Munich.

Contribution to air pollution control / clean air in the City of Munich

The platform enables detailed analysis of pollution emissions by integrating and visualizing monitoring stations and sensor data. Based on examination areas, the required data can be provided through an interface for micro or macro scale air pollutant modeling. The results of the simulations can then be sent back to the geodata exchange platform. By localizing emission sources and modeling scenarios precisely, appropriate measures can be developed to improve the air quality.

Perspective of the action

The geodata exchange platform represents a significant step towards a smarter and more sustainable city. It offers the ability to provide geodata tailored to specific use cases and projects through a role-based self-service platform. For collaboration on projects and cross-project networking, it is an essential infrastructure. In the long term, it will enable improved urban planning and management through profound data usage and scenario modeling. As digitalization progresses and the demands on urban spaces continue to grow, this platform will play a key role in Munich's future development.

Mobile Mapping and Feature Extraction

The Digital Twin Munich uses panoramic images and inventories to support the city administration.

The construction sites map can be viewed on the Geoportal. With the help of icons, the map provides an overview of current and planned construction sites and no-stopping zones in Munich that will cause restrictions on driving, walking and parking over the next two to six weeks.
