The Digital Twin Munich project is an excellent illustration of how visionary ideas and interdisciplinary collaboration positively impact urban development.
The project was designed with a strong communication component right from the start in order to facilitate intensive cross-departmental collaboration. In the initial phase, numerous workshops were held in the various departments and in municipal companies to explain the vision and goals of the Digital Twin Munich and to identify needs. These early dialogs allowed broad support and the necessary expertise to be mobilized for the project. It enabled the project team to identify key stakeholders in the city administration, provide them with space, utilize their expertise and break new ground. This was possible due to flat hierarchies and interdisciplinary teams of experts from different departments. In addition, a collaborative project management approach, which was new to the city administration, contributed significantly to the success of the project. This approach allowed the project team to be flexible and responsive to the ever-changing needs of a city.
