Exemplary modeling of traffic-related air pollution through nitrogen oxides (NOX) by the Technical University of Munich based on data of the Munich Digital Twin. The modeled concentration of nitrogen oxide emitted by traffic per cubic meter of air is shown.

The combination of multiple data sources enables the modeling of traffic-related air pollution.

In addition to selective measurements by the Bavarian Environmental State Office and the Department of Climate and Environmental Protection of the City of Munich, the modeling of traffic-related air pollution can help visualize the influence of traffic on air quality across the entire urban area of Munich.

The test proved that, by combining different modeling tools and data sources, air pollution can be modeled very precisely over time. With its broad database, the Digital Twin Munich acts as a central link.

Ultimately, by modeling discussed traffic measures, the forecasting capability of the model can be utilized to contribute to the evaluation of measures, support in political decision making as well as external communication.

Contribution to the digitalization of municipal transport systems

The “Modeling of traffic-related air pollution” testing with the Digital Twin Munich demonstrates a transferable digitalization project for strengthening decision-making in municipal mobility and improving health and environmental protection by using traffic data, environmental data as well as meteorological data.

Contribution to air pollution control / clean air in the City of Munich

Next to a legally non-binding statement on air pollution (in contrast to the selective measurements of the Bavarian Environmental State Office) and compliance with applicable thresholds, the influence of traffic measures on air quality in the entire urban area (e.g., due to re-routed traffic) can be better estimated before implementation.

Perspective of the action

In addition to the existing air quality measurements, the Digital Twin Munich can be used to support political decision-making, e.g., in the continuation of the Munich Clean Air Plan or urban traffic planning. Furthermore, external communication (e.g., towards citizens or municipal departments) can be assisted. The Validation of the model results via real data is still pending.
