Mobile Mapping and Feature Extraction

The Digital Twin Munich uses panoramic images and inventories to support the city administration.

As part of the project "Digital Twin Munich", iNovitas GmbH conducted a survey on behalf of the GeodataService Munich from 2019 to 2020, during which specialized surveying vehicles with a camera setup were used. The aim of the survey was to obtain an exact three-dimensional image of the streets of Munich and enable a tour of the city via a web viewer as well as measurements and collecting further information using 3D panoramic images.

The final survey data is available to all employees at the City of Munich and Stadtwerke München for their daily work, thanks to pixelation and IP whitelist. Measuring, capturing and interacting with data within the web viewer helps to optimize planning projects that contribute to the sustainable development of our city. 

Contribution to the digitalization of municipal transport systems

The use of a 3D web viewer to visualize the road space and the inventorying of objects such as traffic signs and road markings enables the city administration and Stadtwerke München to accomplish numerous tasks without the need to be on-site. This means that measures can be planned and conducted effectively without additional on-site appointments.

Contribution to air pollution control / clean air in the City of Munich

The use of a 3D web viewer enables the city administration to carry out very precise advance planning directly at their respective workplaces. This reduces the need for on-site appointments, saves time and reduces car traffic in the city area.

Perspective of the action

Regular mobile mapping surveys of the entire city area as well as additional individual mobile mapping surveys provide an up-to-date picture of the road space at all times. Further inventories such as parking lots and electric charging stations also enable better planning regarding the challenges of the energy transition and the development of a sustainable City of Munich.

The construction sites map can be viewed on the Geoportal. With the help of icons, the map provides an overview of current and planned construction sites and no-stopping zones in Munich that will cause restrictions on driving, walking and parking over the next two to six weeks.
