Derivation of a semantic 3D city model from the photorealistic mesh model.

The mesh model is a detailed, photorealistic representation of the City of Munich. However, as no additional information can be integrated, the mesh must be divided into semantic 3D objects.
Buildings represent a particular challenge. Data acquisition and the processing method of the mesh cause unevenness in the surface. Therefore, the building footprints of the digital cadastral map cannot be used directly to subdivide the mesh. Any deviation of the mesh outside the defined footprint areas would be visible as a hole. To avoid this, the building footprints are enlarged by a flexibly defined buffer (e.g. 2m). The developed algorithm recognizes adjacent footprints and prevents overlaps.

Contribution to the digitalization of municipal transport systems

Realistic 3D building models were generated by this method for the entire city and can be integrated in the semantic 3D city model. This enables visualizations with a high recognition value, which offers great added value, especially in participation processes. Buildings with a special significance for the traffic (e.g. schools or places of interest) can be integrated directly.

Contribution to air pollution control / clean air in the City of Munich

The building models generated using this method are used for public participation (e.g. strengthening the cycling infrastructure). They make the semantic 3D city model easier to interpret by allowing individual buildings with a high recognition value (so-called landmarks) to be displayed in a photorealistic manner. This makes the scenarios shown for reducing car traffic easier to communicate.

Perspective of the action

The algorithm developed can be executed for individual sub-areas or the entire city space. This means that the derived building models can be updated at any time if new cadastral data or a new mesh model is available. The data can be retrieved city-wide or provided for individual project areas. Realistic building models can be generated and used directly without additional effort.

Mobile Mapping and Feature Extraction

The Digital Twin Munich uses panoramic images and inventories to support the city administration.

The construction sites map can be viewed on the Geoportal. With the help of icons, the map provides an overview of current and planned construction sites and no-stopping zones in Munich that will cause restrictions on driving, walking and parking over the next two to six weeks.
